Canterbury College and Reigate College take on the Charity Shop Challenge

Last week from 19–25 February we celebrated Student Volunteering Week (SVW) – an annual celebration of the contribution students make in their communities and to local charities through volunteering. We took the opportunity to thank students who volunteer in our shops, at events or completing work experience and internships with us. In 2016 we only had 64 people aged 13 – 25 volunteering with us, but in 2017 we had over 350! Thank you to each and every one. Volunteer Megan and Joseph outside of The Children's Trust

Charity Shop Challenge

Students got involved, volunteering for The Children’s Trust during the week by taking part in our Charity Shop Challenge. On Wednesday 21 February we had two colleges, Reigate College and Canterbury College, volunteering in our shops. They were competing against each other to see who could increase sales in the shop and raise the most for children with brain injury in one day. Four students from Canterbury College volunteered in our Canterbury shop. They used the skills and knowledge gained from their Level 1 Retail Skills course to help re-merchandise the window display. Volunteers take part in Student Volunteering Week for The Children's Trust Paul, shop manager at our Canterbury shop, said: "The students have gained experience whilst helping the community. They are enthusiastic and provide a lot of ideas that have stemmed from their courses." Students from Reigate College were volunteering at our shop in Reigate, and they too got involved in dressing the window ready for Mother’s Day on 11 March. They also helped regular volunteer Jo out in the stock room, sifting through donations and pricing them up ready to go out on the shop floor. And the winners are?

Total sales in the Canterbury Shop were £432.90, and last week they were £475.10, but the team managed to process more than double the amount of donations. Reigate Shop had a particularly successful day for sales. Their total was £612.15, up from £442.80 last week. Whilst both teams ensured the shop had successful trading days, and the Canterbury Shop will probably reap the benefits of all the new stock this week, it was Reigate College who won the challenge, and managed to increase sales by 38%.
