Upper Limb Serial Casting Course

07 June 2019
This two-day training course will provide therapists with the theory, evidence and skills to effectively apply serial casts to the upper limbs of children and young people with neurological impairment. This predominantly practical-based course will give practitioners the opportunity to learn and practice applying various upper limb serial soft-casts. Techniques taught are time-efficient and light on resources, to enable realistic implementation of this highly effective treatment for service users.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to demonstrate:
  1. Understanding of why serial casting is used as an adjunctive treatment to upper limb management
  2. Accurate assessment of aspects of upper limb impairment (i.e. range of movement, spasticity and contracture) using appropriate measures such as goniometry, Modified Tardieu, and MAS
  3. Delivery of an appropriate serial casting program for management of neurological upper limb impairment, including identification of joints to be casted, materials to be used, number of casts to complete, contraindications, outcome measures and post-casting follow-up.
  4. Novice skills in the safe and effective application of upper limb serial soft casting.

Who should attend

The course content is developed for paediatric occupational therapists and physiotherapists who have experience in working with children and young people with neurological-based upper limb impairments in the community or acute environment.
